Survival Cooking

The embers of the big cooking fire

Firstly a few "thank you's"...

Thank you:

  • Pam and David from the Fellowship - As ever your enthusiasm for backwoods cooking ensures a great evening
  • Simon and his friendly land owners - for 'catching' and supplying the rabbits
  • Tony and the friendly owners of the woods in Flimwell. It is great to be allowed to use such a fantastic location!

Another great turnout! Good to see we all lived up to the 'Explorer' name and managed to find the site, despite Rob's vague directions.

The first, in what we hope will be a series, survival style event saw us take to the woods in Flimwell.

Fires were quickly established. Whilst, for those that were interested, Pam took us though a few inventive local types of tinder! Unfortunately, Rob will be lighting no more fires with his flint and steel after Simon managed to build a fire ontop of said tool... Anyone get a good discount at Blacks?

The main goal of the evening was to learn how to prepare and eat an animal which you had caught. This is survival, don't you know! Due to the time constraints, rabbits were supplied. However there was still the small matter of skinning and gutting them, before skwering and roasting.

Other activities including curing a hide as well as a few other cooking techniques such as baking meat within cabbage leaves or spatch-cock chicken

Watch out DofE, there might be a few rabbit shaped snacks heading your way!
