How about coming with us to Kenya in August 2009?
We will be going to Kisii, a town in the southwest of Kenya, where the Street children have been banded together under their Leader Thomas to follow the principles of Scouting that are the same all over the world. Through negotiation, the East Sussex Kenya Street Scouts appeal charity has obtained a plot of land and helped with the funding so that Thomas and his Group can build themselves a Headquarters, with our assistance.
Fifteen Explorer Scouts who will be over the age of fifteen on 1st August 2009, will be able to join the Expedition to help the Kisii Scouts complete their Headquarters building, and the smallholding buildings required for their animals. We may have ground clearance work including tree felling to do, painting and decorating, and the installation of a solar panel for power. We will camp at the site, on a steep hillside, while we share this work with our Kenyan friends.
The Group will spend a week on the project before taking the opportunity to see more of Kenya and the sights, sounds (and smells!) that it can offer. We will visit BPs grave and his house Paxtu, see many wild animals and birds on a National Park visit, feed giraffes by hand, cross the equator, see tea being grown and picked and meet other Scouts and their Leaders as well as seeing another, very different, country to our own.
Each member of the Expedition will fund their own travel, accommodation, food and the costs of visits to attractions, and we expect this to total approximately £1,000 per person. Throughout the coming year members will be expected to take part in fund raising activities to help defray some of this cost, and may also seek sponsorship to assist.
If this has caught your attention, we are currently seeking expressions of interest, and all we need to know now is who you are, how we can contact you and that you’ll be over fifteen on 1st August 2009.
We’ll send you some further details and ask you to confirm your interest. We will then hold a shortlisting day, when you will be expected to come and meet us, and tell us why you want to come to Kenya, and answer a few further questions. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions yourself of course. For those who make the shortlist we will be arranging a selection camp, where you will have the chance to work with us and demonstrate the skills and qualities that you can offer the Expedition.
Selection will mean commitment to a year’s hard work fund raising and preparing for the experience of another world that you’ll never forget.
We promise!
